Welcome, language lovers and afternoon tea enthusiasts!
At Evert’s British English Corner in Cagayan de Oro, we believe that learning English shouldn’t feel like school—it should feel like a jolly good time. And what better way to dive into the language than with a cup of tea, a biscuit, and a good laugh?
One of the first things students ask is, “What’s the difference between British and American English?” Well, it’s more than just swapping a ‘z’ for an ‘s’ or adding a ‘u’ to words.
British English vs. American English: Not Just ‘Colour’ and ‘Humour’
Vocabulary:
In Britain, you put your shopping in a boot (that’s the trunk), walk on the pavement (not the sidewalk), and wear trainers (not sneakers).
Spelling:
It’s realise, not realize; theatre, not theater.
Expressions:
Feeling tired? You’re knackered. Someone annoying? Tell them to sod off (politely, of course).
Learning Through Laughter: British Comedy in the Classroom
We don’t just memorize vocabulary here—we live it. That’s why we start every session with a classic episode from shows like:
“Are You Being Served?”
Watch how British sarcasm, double meanings, and polite awkwardness unfold in the legendary Grace Brothers department store.
“Keeping Up Appearances”
Hyacinth Bucket (pronounced Bouquet, of course) teaches us how the British use language to climb the social ladder—while failing hilariously.
Tales of the Unexpected
We kick things off with this slightly spooky, always intriguing series from Roald Dahl. It’s English… with a twist.
Themed Vocabulary & Roleplay: You’re Not Just Watching – You’re In It!
After each show, we:
Discuss key phrases and idioms.
Do roleplay scenes (yes, you get to be Mrs. Slocombe or Onslow!)
Practice pronunciation, tone, and facial expressions—because the British don’t just speak… they perform.
Why It Works: A Fun, Cozy Way to Learn
We keep our classes:
Small & friendly (like a village pub).
Interactive (no boring lectures).
Cosy & comfy (we serve tea and snacks too!).
